Writer's Cafe - a place for writers

If anyone that likes to write wants some great feedback, good community and a place to showcase their writing, enter contests and be inspired...then I recommend The Writer's Cafe.
I really like this place and it's very personable and I've had a lot of fun there and got some help with my own writing. Hope this is a helpful resource to other writers here.

About michele74

I am hoping to find assistance with bills and disablity. I have fibromyalgia, Crohn's disease, migraines, and hypothyroidism. Though I cannot work, I have been unable to get disability through the government. My husband does have insurance through his work, but he works for very low wages. Because of my health problems, I cannot qualify for any other insurance, so we are stuck in this job. Our insurance does not cover a lot of my medical bills. We have a lot of debt that is directly related to my medical problems -- not for personal reasons. I also love to write and would like to publish a book of Christian poetry if I were to find the financial assistance to do so. We have one 7 year old daughter, but I am unable to have any more children due to my health problems. We would also love to adopt, but cannot afford the fees that even the income-based programs charge.

Freelance Writing -10 places to look By Kathryn V

10 Places To Look For Freelance Writing Job Leads in 2009
Posted by kathrynv at 8:07 am in freelance, freelance jobs, writer's life, writing

I have written in the past about the many different places that there are to look for freelance writing work. There are classified ad sites like Craigslist where jobs are advertised. There are bid sites like Elance that you can sign up to participate in (although I’ve never liked that option much). There are proactive options like coldcalling and contacting potential new clients via email.

I have used all of those at one time or another and still do use them regularly (minus the bid sites). However, the thing that I do most frequently to look for new freelance writing work is to check the links on the websites that offer freelance job leads. These job leads may come from the individual sites (like Craigslist) or may be in the form of posts about individual jobs. Either way, they typically provide a good collection of leads that point me in the right direction for what work is being offered out there.

Here are the ten sites that I’m checking most frequently for job leads in 2009:

  1. Freelance Writing Gigs. Deb Ng continues to be the best provider out there for daily leads on jobs. There’s a list of links up every weekday (and some weekends) as well as smaller individual posts from specific potential clients.
  2. About Freelance Writing. Deb Ng pointed readers in the direction of leads on this site recently which turned me on to the site. There are fewer leads here but they’re posted steadily and they are sometimes different from what you’re seeing on the other sites.
  3. All Freelance Writing. The same post by Deb that pointed me in the direction of About Freelance Writing also pointed me here. Same deal. Good stuff.
  4. Problogger. I continue to check the Problogger job leads daily for info on potential blogging jobs that may be available.
  5. Performancing Blogger Jobs. This one isn’t nearly as good as problogger but people seeking blogging work may find the occasional good lead here.
  6. Freelance Job Openings. Usually only a few posted here each day but often ones worth pursuing.
  7. Online Writing Jobs. This is a comprehensive list of what’s out there. It can be overwhelming but you can filter by the type of jobs that you want to look at (blogging, articles, books, etc.) so that makes it easier to find the work that you want.
  8. Absolute Write. Only a couple posted here each day but always different from what’s being advertised elsewhere.
  9. Media Bistro. Many of the jobs here are on-site jobs but you can sometimes find telecommute work.
  10. Journalism Jobs. Same deal as Media Bistro but often worth a look.

Where else do you check for freelance job leads?

Regrets

We all have regrets. Things that might make us feel less than or inferior. When all the "Would of", "Should of" or "Could of's" enter our minds.

My point for this post is in hopes to get people to open up and start talking about what things if given the chance to do them over again, what would it be? I get so sick and tired of beating myself up and watching other good people do the same.

I regret so many things in life that I have done wrong. Due to my stubborn nature I have always went against the grain of great advice. And sometimes it is not my fault, it comes naturally inherited. But there is always room for changing the things that we do; that do us harm. All because of how we view ourselves.

I regret that I might have to file bankruptcy for the second time. With all of the new bills and laws that are being passed in favor of major creditors, I just gave up on being harassed for late payments. Not to mention the raised interest rate penalties, fees and  always never being able to catch up and my credit is shot. But I know that I am a good person. I work two jobs, barely making ends meet. I know now that is their job to provide a service that appears to have a silver lining. Only to ensnare you into a relationship you did not ask for. One that gets in your pockets and truly does not care anything about an individual or their circumstance.

Trust me I have many more regrets to post... But healing is far more priceless. Life's learned lessons are just that. Learned experiences.

Peace & Blessings

A LITTLE ABOUT ME,,,

Some people collect stamps, others collect recipes, my collection consists of stacks & stacks of words on paper. Words & the paper that holds them, have been my passion since my elementary school days. I acquired my first manual typewriter at the age of ten. I discovered then, that I seemed to have a talent for communicating my emotions and thoughts onto paper. My passion has persistently kept me company through out my life. Even when I had nothing else, through thick and thin, I have always carried my words with me. And whenever I felt the need, I would write. Writing has always somehow been a type of therapy for me. Whenever I experienced joy, or pain, or sadness, or a revelation, I would simply pull out my notebook and methodically put my thoughts down onto paper.

I have always lived by the motto that one has to be passionate about their work. It would be ideal to get paid to do something that I love to do. I would like to continue with my lifelong passion, and I came to the conclusion that working as a professional writer is something that would allow my creative expression to also be my income resource.

I've always been independent, not so much a loner, but more like I'm on the outside looking in. I could be in a crowd with hundreds of people around me and yet feel as if I don't quite belong. I hope to get the opportunity to share my thoughts with the world, one blog at a time. It's time for me to have fun and stop taking the world so seriously.

Earning Cash

There are places to make extra cash on the internet that are valid sites, and not scam sites. I admit that it is not easy to make cash in today's society, without running across all those scam sites, but i have a few listed here, that do actually pay. I will try to give a fairly quick description with each one.

http://www.ehow.com/how_4606325_write-a-poem.html  This is an article that i wrote, just to give you some idea of what this one is about. Ehow, is very easy to write for. It's all about "how to do things". I even wrote one, on how to make a pot of coffee, so you see virtually anything that you know how to do; there is someone else, that is wanting to learn how to do just that.

I will add more each day, and hopefully, my listings will help you also.

Saturday Night

Well it is Saturday night and today has been busy. I had an assignment from Odesk and I think I am almost done with that. My boss hasn't given me any feedback from that. I am excited about this new gig...and hope to make some real money. I will let you all know. From the feedback I have gotten, it is a legit company with some real promise. I can work when I feel like it. I also get paid doing something I always wanted to do...write...I am not a professional writer, however, you never know. I do know I need a better grammer checker and I think I will be looking for that as well as a Thesaurus.

How is Spring at your house? We are enjoying some wonderful weather and everything is getting green..Isn't that great? I am excited. I am sorry that I haven't been around for a few days, but I am trying to get myself set up on this Odesk stuff..If you have a chance and you enjoy being on the computer and have some skills, you should look it up. I think I can make just enough to keep my SSDI coming and I don't even have to leave home, if I don't wanna...How great is that...Well off the computer for awhile. I am ready to sit in my recliner...haven't been there today..

Consider The Possibilities

Writing has thousands of faces.

Think Jane Austin. Think Ernest Hemingway. Think...Not! Okay, I know what you're thinking. But I thought the same way too about writing. Hey, let's face it. It's one challenging cookie to crack. Anyone who's ever ventured in this field, understood it's dedication and rejection associated. But don't let it scare you. There are many tools to help you reach your writing goals and now more than ever is a great time to get started.

You can even earn while you learn. No, I'm not referring to the $3 per 500 word article crap. I'm talking real money, real clients, real pay, real..well you get the idea.

So you're probably wondering, what can I write about. Writing does not just consist of blogs, books, magazines, and movie scripts. As a matter of fact, once you get some creative juices flowing, you'll discover that writing encompasses just about everything. Beth Folwer has written an excellent ebook entitled 83 Ways to Make Money Writing that can give you some ideas to plan you in a great direction. Read it, study it, add to it, and make it come alive.

Got Hunger? Need Food?

Perfecting the skills

Have you thought about what you're going to write about? Great. Now let's go back to class because school is definitely in session. Writing involves excellent written communication. We're not just talking about knowing the differences between to, too, and two or it's and its. We're talking big boy tricks. Don't feel as though you have to know everything before you begin writing. In fact, if you don't create a disciplined daily writing routine, and stick with it, you'll get bored, frustrated, and may end up quitting before beginning. So here are some great resources for touching up on grammar, style, and usage.

At some point you're going to have to decide which avenue to take to begin writing. You could start a blog, write articles for online sites, or start your client base. Of course there are many ways to accomplish this task. A good way to do this is to register with bidding sites. When doing this, you want to consider the website and project carefully because writing and time are oftentimes devalued. Here are some links to get you started.

Job Resource Sites

Freelance writing jobs are all over the place. While the competition is steep, the more professional you brand yourself and your services, the more jobs you'll rank in. A great site to find the most job resources is at Writing Hermit. This little wordpress blog is a goldmine for writing job nuggets and lists so many. And there are a few more resource sites that I absolutely love. In my opinion, you don't need a hundred resources to get you what you need, you just need the right path, and these references will most certainly steer you right.

A Poem Called I am the Train

"I'm moving on a locomotive. It's a flash of light. Motion. Speed. Exhilaration. I'm pounding my fists onto some steel. It's hard. My teeth clench. The sound of metal bending. Someone rings a soiled rag and dirty water trickles onto clammy ground. A beetle scurries by. The train roars a deadly, hefty cry. "Remember me when I'm gone!" It sings. I am alone, shivering, pale as the moon in December. I am the train. And I am furious." - Poem by Me

Guess My Name

Guess My Name

For My God

Sandra Rains

Though I walk through the valley

of uncertainty

I will not fear the unseen

And though I walk through pain

and misery

I will not become unclean

I have roamed this world for decades

untouched by human hands

I am but a fading memory

full of pain, you can not comprehend

In dark my face looks tattard

worn and abused

In light I am like you

mistreated and used

I am the man that comes by

in the middle of the day

To hand you a book of wisdom

"I'm not interested", you say

So, I turn and walk away

Unshaken by your denial

Knowing you'll come begging

after a little while

For this world will soon be over

I'm gathering my sheep

I will not abandon

those I plan to keep

Can you guess my name?

Can you say it aloud?

In this, there is no shame

You must confess, you can not be proud

I am the pretty butterfly

that gently lands

My wings are that of velvet

My eye's that of man

I am the stray dog

that no one wants to feed

I am the open wound

that continues to bleed

Can you guess my name?

Will you talk of me?

Are you my friend?

Or my worst enemy?

This world will soon be over

it is coming to an end

Will you be saved and ready?

or committing sin?

Will you be waiting for me?

Or partying the night away?

Listen to me closely

and hear what I have to say

The end is so close, I know it

I set the date

Ask me for forgiveness

Do not hesitate

Asking, is all it takes

two words from you to me

Do this one thing

and 'chosen' you will be

But if you choose to wait

and put it off for another day

It's possible it'll be too late

Because I'm on my way

Now I have forwarned you

And I didn't mix my words

you can not call these parables

you can't blame me for your hurt

Just stop and look around you

Can't you see the devils deeds?

I'm asking you to claim your ground

and plant my loving seeds?

If you do this for me

I will not forget you or your own

and I will reward you

and place you by my throne

Can you guess my name?

It's easy if you read the signs

It's just three little letters

known to all mankind

Can you guess my name?

Must I tell you after all these years?

Didn't you know my name

When I wiped away your tears?

Didn't you say "Please God, help me?"

And didn't I come fast and running?

and didn't I show compassion and help you mercifully?

It shouldn't be so hard

for you to say my name

When it has never changed

It's always been the same

I am the setting sun

that you so admire

I am the warmth you so love

by the wooded fire

I am the miracle

that amazes you.... when you die

I am your Lord Savior and Christ

I am your God.... it is "I"

Writing Basics

When I came to the online world I will admit I was shocked. As a professional I could not get over the inappropriate use of grammar. It made me wonder what a great many adults did for a living that they had such poor writing styles. I then began to realize what had occurred was the fault of the instant messaging systems on cellular phones. Adults had become so relaxed with their writing in order to use such systems that it had crossed over into their writing across the board. I can’t tell you the number of letters from parents I’ve seen over my years of teaching that slip into instant message grammar. The sad fact is though this type of writing leads people to be taken less serious. I know that when I read articles, essays, pleas for help that are so atrociously written that I trust very little of the content. I understand that I should indeed not be harsh on those for whom English is not a primarily language, but the reality is there are many countries out there who speak and write better English than we Americans do at home. So, my advise for those writing articles, writings, and so forth online for others to read, double check your grammar ahead of time. Simply write your first drafts in a word program and hit the grammar and spell check.

Now granted, it won’t catch all of your errors but you can program to catch those you make often so as not to make them when writing something that is to be read by other professionals. This includes notes to the teachers. I’ve met parents that I assumed had the same learning disorder as their child only to find out they had no such order, they simply could not master the English language. They expected their child to simply not be held accountable for English and wanted it included on their I.E.P. because the parent was unable to properly use the English language. I have to shake my head as a teacher on this one. So, how can you better prepare yourself on the basic mechanics? There is a wonderful website created by Purdue University that will tutor you in the basic grammar mechanics. http://owl.english.purdue.edu/

New way to make MONEY

Hello,

Well today is Monday of the Labor Day Weekend, A sure sign that winter is just around the corner. One last hurah to picnic and enjoy family and friends in an "outside" surrounding before being forced indoors by cold winds and fridgid weather. Here in W. Rutland the weather today is beautiful for taking advantage of just that. I do not (at this time) have access to an outdoor arena for such activities as picnicing, so I am making plans for winter activities. Indoor winter activities, that I'm hoping will make me some money too. I came accross a site called "Our Town" recently that looks like it just might provide a nice indoor activity, while making money. It is an online community site that offers you to take over a zip code near you and set up a page that you are editor over. You make money by selling on-line ads to local businesses. Our times shares the revenue from that with you. (40/60). You also would hook up with local churchs, your local school and townhall for all your local news of who's doing what and when. I got very lucky as I was one of the 1st 1000 to sign up my first year is totally FREE. I'm not sure how many more to go before they hit past  1000 but they are pretty new. The Licence fee after that will be $1,000.00 per year. So if you're interested go check it out now and see if you're one of the 1st 1000. If you mention my name I get an extra free month but I'm not too worried about that, I'd rather help someone who might benefit from this.

Well Hope Everyone Is Having a GREAT Labor Day inside or out!

Till Next Time...

Remember, you deserve to be happy!

totally single mother needs help

Since my ex husband left me when I was two months pregnant, I have endured the trials of single motherhood. I get no child support nor any financial assistance because he signed his rights up. However, I am living at home with my parents, my son is now 4 so it has been about 5 years. I am currently in college, graduating in May with an Associates Degree in Pre-English. My plans are to continue until I complete my Bachelors Degree with a major concentration in English and a minor in History. Along with this degree I plan to receive a teaching certificate to teach secondary education. I currently write for a local newspaper, although the pay is very little. At $20.00 an article/week, that is barely enough for gas money. If anyone can tell me how to earn extra money, or receive extra money, it would be greatly appreciated. Some of the reason I need more monetary funds is: gas to commute back and forth to college (an hours drive away), my son wants to play baseball, clothes, etc. Some of the things I can do are: write any type of paper (including resumes, essays, research papers, speeches, etc), and Pray. If anyone has any advice please let me know on here or on my email at natoshab21@yahoo.com Thank you so much for reading... Natosha

I need a grant to help with my research on the Internet for books I want to write.

I need a grant for my writing. I need to purchase a new computer and better writing software. (Dictionary, Thesaurus, etc) I also would use it to purchase a better internet service provider than I currently have. Dsl would help me out alot better than the Dialup I currently use. Also I would purchase a separate phone line so that I could use the internet while my family was on the phone.
